Roof Mounted Attic Fan Installation
Step 1. From the inside of your attic, start from the ridge of your roof and measure down 20″. Then find the center between two rafters and mark that spot. Now you will want to drive a nail in that spot up and through the roof.
Step 2. Now get onto your roof and find the nail. Now using the nail as your center point use your compass and draw out a circle measured to the specifications of the fan you bought. You can find this in the product description by going here and selecting your product.
Step 3. Using your utility knife, cut on the circle that you drew out. Pull out the roofing nails and remove the cut shingles.
Step 4. Now comes the part where you cut a hole in the roof to accommodate for the fan. Make sure that you do not cut into your rafters when doing this. Measure the space between your rafters to make sure that you do not cut a hole too big. Now using the specifications of the fan you bought, use your reciprocating saw to cut the hole in your roof.
Step 5. Remove all of the shingles around the hole so that your fan flashing can fit onto your roof. Now take your roof caulking and caulk around the edge of the hole that you cut. Place your fan flashing on top of the wet caulking and screw the flashing to the roof.
Step 6. Now put a little more caulking around your fan flashing and put your shingles back in place. And that’s it! Your solar attic fan is installed and ready for operation, no wiring required.
Gable Mounted Attic Fan Installation
Step 1. The gable fan needs to be installed between studs in the gable area. It should also cover the entire gable opening for the best ventilation. If the opening is too big for the fan shroud to cover, you should cover the excess opening with something else. Once you’ve positioned the fan, use the required hardware to mount it in place.
Step 2. Next is the solar panel. Find a place on your roof where the solar panel will get the most sunlight. Use the brackets and provided screws to attach the solar panel to the roof and use a little caulking around the screws to prevent leaks.
Step 3. You have a couple options for how you want to route your power cable from your fan to your solar panel.
Option one: Drill a small hole in your roof next to your solar panel. Route the cable from your fan to your attic and through the hole you drilled in the roof.
Option two: Route the cable from the fan through the gable vent and along the outside of your house up to your roof.
