Do these solar fans qualify for state tax credits?
They may be eligible for tax credits depending on the state that you live in. There is a database of state solar incentives at: www.dsireusa.org
Do these solar fans qualify for federal tax credits?
Yes, they do. They qualify for a federal tax credit through 2016. To file for the credit, you simply claim the tax credit on your return using the IRS form 5695.
What direction should the solar panel face?
For best performance, the solar panel should be facing due south. If this is not possible, then it can also be facing southwest as well, with only a small loss in performance.
What angle do I set the solar panel for maximum performance?
For best performance throughout the year, the panel angle should be set at an angle that is approximately equal to your degrees latitude. For example, if you live in Atlanta Georgia, the latitude is 33.75 degrees. Therefore you would set the panel to about 34 degrees above horizontal.
Where on the roof should I mount my fan for best performance?
The rooftop fans should be mounted on the surface of your roof, as near to the peak as you can get, and with southern and/or western exposure. The gable fans mount behind a gable vent on the peak of your house, and the solar panel mounts on the roof facing south or southwest.
What size solar fan do I need for my home?
If you have a normally shaped roof, and the slope of your roof is not extremely steep or extremely shallow, then you need at least 1.6 CFM (cubic feet per minute flow rate) for each square foot of roof space. If your house roof is very unusual or very steep or shallow, then you can calculate your requirements. You simply multiply the square footage of your house roof by the average height of your attic space, and then divide by 10. This is the minimum CFM required to ventilate your attic.
What is the payback period for a Rand Solar fan?
Even without the potential tax credits for solar fans mentioned below, the payback period on an attic fan installation is often less than 2 years.
How difficult is it to install a solar fan?
If you have a basic knowledge of normal construction practices, installation is usually very straight forward. On the installation of rooftop fans, this requires cutting a hole in the roof and correctly fitting the shingles to keep the roof water-tight. On the installation of gable vent fans, the fans are normally mounted inside your attic behind a gable mounted vent at you house peak that has fixed position louvers. (They don’t open and close.) The solar panel is then mounted on the roof in good sunlight, and the fasteners must be properly water-proofed. If you don’t feel comfortable performing these tasks, or if you don’t have a asphalt shingle roof, we recommend that you at least consult a professional roofer or carpenter.
